1. Cabin Retreat
Call a nearby state park or other wilderness area and inquire about renting a cabin. Accommodations are typically moderate in price, and you can spend the weekend taking quiet walks, curling up with a good book or writing in your journal. For a little extra pampering, ask for a cabin with a hot tub or whirlpool bath.
2. Ladies' Spa Escape
If you're up for a splurge, book yourself and two or three of your best friends at a full-service resort and spa. You can catch up on each others' lives by the pool and treat yourself to everything from facials to deluxe massages. Ask about special package discounts for bundling several services together.
3. Vacation at Home
Sometimes all you really need is a little peace and quiet in your own house. Send your husband and children to visit the in-laws while you stay behind. You can tackle all of those things you wish you could spend time on but that never seem to reach the top of your to-do list, such as scrapbooking or gardening.
4. Potluck Travels
Reclaim your spirit of adventure by picking your travel destination at the last minute. Many airlines release rock-bottom prices on weekend fares with only a few days' notice. Let the best bargains take you somewhere you might never have gone otherwise. There's nothing like the sights and sounds of a new place to refresh the spirit.
5. Volunteer to House-sit
If you're on a budget, volunteer to house- and/or pet-sit the next time friends leave town for the weekend. You'll enjoy the change of scenery and some quality time alone. This can work with anyone who lives within a few hours' drive from where you live. Sometimes, a short road trip is the best antidote for stress.
